Our history
Gordon & Company was founded in the mid-1930’s by Bobby Israel, who at the time was a world champion ballroom dancer.
In fact, he turned professional on 1st September 1939, so probably had the shortest professional career of anybody. After the war Bobby concentrated on building up the business, but unfortunately he died in 1971. Bobby was married to Renee Stepham a well-respected theatrical agent and TMA Martini Award winner (1994).
Robert Israel was only 17 when his father, Bobby, passed away. The family business beckoned and Robert left school and went to work for Cornhill Insurance Company, who guided him through the rigours of different types of Insurance and the professional examinations. Robert stayed at Cornhill from 1971 to 1974, joining Gordon & Co on 6th January 1975 and has been here ever since.
In April 1999, Gordon & Co launched its First Night scheme. The scheme provides insurance to amateur dramatic and operatic societies up and down the country. Following the success of First Night, Robert introduced First Step in 2005. This is a dedicated insurance scheme for dance teachers belonging to One Dance. Both of these schemes are underwritten by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd.
Robert’s son Michael started working at Gordon & Co in 2008 with a specialism in Cancellation and Non-Appearance Insurance.
In April 2024 Robert was the recipient of an Industry Recognition Olivier Award. Eleanor Lloyd, President of Society of London Theatre, said: “The Industry Recognition category honours some of the most dedicated, hard-working and pioneering individuals in theatre, and this year’s recipients are no exception. We are delighted to present the award to the recipients who have been recognised for their outstanding contribution and service to the industry.” Robert is honoured to have received this accolade and is delighted to look back on his career knowing that in a small way he has and continues to make a difference to the world of theatre.
Michael, together with his sister Amanda, now also working within the business, are the third generation of the family, securing the vision of the future for a company that will shortly be approaching its centenary.
